The Company You Keep Podcast // Sweet & Spark

The Company You Keep Podcast EP #10: Sweet & Spark: Curated Vintage Jewelry

You guys, I’m about to have a BABY! I’m due tomorrow, or actually today since I’m putting this post up first thing in the morning. SOOO since I’m about to be a mama, I’ve decided to take a little break from the podcast for the next few months and enjoy my time with our son. Season one was SO MUCH FUN to make, and even though I had no idea what I was doing, and was extremely uncomfortable interviewing people at first, I think stepping way out of your comfort zone and trying something new is really important. I still listen to shows and think, why did I say that? Or I didn’t even know you could use the word ‘like’ that many times in a sentence!? And I’m sure people think I’m not the best interviewer in the world, but you know what? I don’t really care. I tried something I’ve never done before, and I learned so much. And to me, that’s what I was looking for. Learning something new and meeting new friends …

The Company You Keep Podcast EP #9: Em The Gem Photography

Em Scott is arguably one of the most talented photographers in the Bay Area. Listen to her tell us how she got started, basically with an idea of being a wedding photographer and little experience or knowledge of using her camera equipment. Talk about starting from square one! With dedication and a strong desire to connect with people on a very personal level, Em devoted her time to learning her craft, and built up her business along the way. Em explains her photography process in detail, and how she decided to take on fewer weddings each year so her work could really shine. She also gives us some great advice about using tools like The Strength Finder test to figure out what you are really good at, and how to succeed using your personal strengths. In addition to running Em The Gem Photography, Em is a co-editor behind The Refined Woman, a wonderful blog telling the stories and sharing the style of inspiring women around the country. Em is also a beautiful stylist, and mommy to …

The Company You Keep Podcast EP #8: Defne Crowe of MADE PR

This is a really fun show you guys!! I think everyone who either has a product or is running their own company will get some valuable advice from this episode. Defne Crowe did something very risky when she turned 30, she decided to leave her stable job in PR, and branched out on her own. At the time, one client came with her (this is all so Jerry Maguire and I love it!) and from word-of-mouth marketing she has been able to land her dream client – Blue Bottle Coffee- and has grown her firm to represent some of the biggest brands in their respective industries! MADE PR specializes in handcrafted communications for handmade goods, which is very exciting for the maker’s movement. Some of her clients include, Three Twins Ice Cream, Self Edge Denim, Timbuk2 and Goorin Bros. Hat Company. We chat about what it’s like to move to San Francisco, and how finding your groove can take a little while. We discuss how to land your dream client and create PR campaigns specifically …

The Company You Keep Podcast EP #7: Christina Weber of Studio Patro

Not very many of the creative entrepreneurs I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing can say they have spent their entire career in various fields, almost exclusively as a freelance artist or entrepreneur. Sometimes that flair to be self-employed is just IN you. This is exactly the case for Christina Weber. Christina spent many years doing graphic design and owned her own firm in Denver, CO. She went on to do freelance catalog styling and design for Williams Sonoma before launching her current company, Studio Patro almost six years ago. Studio Patro is a luxury kitchen linen company with bright and modern tea towels and lovely linen aprons. I brought many of her beautiful linens into Truck & Barter (our general store) because I loved everything so much! Christina has a rich story to tell, and gracefully shares what motivates her, what her daily design process is like in her studio in San Francisco, and how important it is to not only get onto blogs, but into gift guides, magazines and trade shows to really get your …

The Company You Keep Podcast // Chloris Floral

The Company You Keep Podcast EP #6 – Chloris Floral

Today’s show features Betany Coffland, a real-life opera singer turned flower farmer and floral designer! Her story of attending  Juilliard school of music – arguably the best music school in the the world- and then going on to become an opera singer and performer is captivating! We chat about her making the decision to move to Italy (I think this whole moving to Italy thing is becoming a theme around here!) and then eventually settling in the Bay Area to pursue a new love: flower farming. Betany took her knowledge of farming and applied it to organic and farm fresh flower arranging, started a CSA and created a really interesting business along the way. We talk about the similarities in marketing yourself as an opera singer and as a florist- two careers that seemingly have nothing in common!  Betany also explains what got her really interested in farm fresh flowers in the first place and the importance of buying from a farmer as opposed to a grocery store. I hope you enjoy the show! If so, …
