Today’s post was inspired by one of my favorite interior designers, Amber Lewis aka Amber Interiors. Amber takes the most ordinary spaces and uses a wide assortment of color and texture to create calm, serene and comfortable homes. I am not a fan of the ‘more is more’ design philosophy, and even though Amber uses bold colors and tons of texture, her spaces never ever feel overdone or cluttered. One element that I’ve noticed in almost all of her designs are the rich colors of ethnic rugs and pillows.
The word “kilim” is of Turkish origin, but woven kilim rugs and pillows are produced in a wide range of geographical areas that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China.
You can find knock off kilims at big box retail stores, but there is truly nothing like the real deal. That’s why I love Etsy. Often times you can buy directly from Turkey, and the costs are still very affordable! I know that Etsy can be a mess, I mean there is SO much bad mixed in with the good. So I’ve gone ahead and done the leg work for you and picked my favorites.
I’d love to hear what you think of this design trend!
I think this might be my favorite breakfast nook of all time. I love the all white wall and cabinet selection, and the mix of bold pattern and texture. Amber mixes persian rugs with ethnic pillows and french stripe ticking fabric on the banquette seat! Plus those huge windows let in the most relaxing light.
